Education & Training
Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency
The Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is designed to provide comprehensive, integrated training including core general surgery, vascular surgery, and endovascular surgery over the course of a five-year, ACGME-approved clinical program. Consistent with our tradition of training leaders in academic vascular surgery, trainees will have 2 years of academic development time between the third and fourth clinical years, which can be spent conducting research or pursuing an advanced degree.
Clinical training includes a total of 22 months spent on core surgical rotations, and 38 months of experience concentrated on vascular surgery, obtained at four integrated sites that provide broad exposure to diverse patient populations and varied healthcare systems. The integrated residency program complements our long-standing “5+2” fellowship program in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, the first recognized vascular surgery program in the United States. The program accepts one candidate per year directly following medical school.
Vascular Surgery Fellowship
In 1962, Malcolm Perry M.D. was appointed as UCSF's first Vascular Surgical Fellow, completed an intense one-year training program, and conducted clinical research in Cerebro-Vascular disease. The UCSF vascular surgery fellowship was the first in the U.S., and more than 100 fellows have completed their training here, prior to embarking on a career in vascular surgery (more than half are in academic centers, in the U.S. or abroad).
The UCSF Vascular Surgery Fellowship is a two-year, ACGME-approved program with one fellow per year. The program provides comprehensive clinical training in the management of vascular disorders and is dedicated to the development of future leaders in vascular surgery. Both years are spent on the vascular surgery service and clinical rotations provide extensive treatment and non-invasive diagnosis.
Limb Preservation Fellowship
The UCSF Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Limb Preservation Fellowship is a one-year non-ACGME fellowship program for physicians who have completed podiatric training and who wish to further specialize in limb salvage. The fellowship is part of the education and training mission of the UCSF Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. Fellows will rotate through vascular/podiatry multidisciplinary clinics at UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus, and San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (SFGH).
UCSF Vascular Surgery Symposium
The annual Vascular Symposium focuses on advances in vascular therapies are reviewed and their application in various vascular beds examined with respect to limiting procedure morbidity and enhancing durability.
